Patty Murray once said, “Good education means learning to read, write and most importantly learn how to learn so that you can be whatever you want to be when you grow up” and I believe in that when it comes to what is “Excellent Education”.
7 years after finishing my high school, and 2 years after my post graduation, what I learnt from life was that, only if those theories and principles in classes could have been taught with the perspective of implementation in real life rather than just to get marks of degree, things could have been different today.
There are a lot of words out there about “Excellent Education” and “What an Excellent Education Really Means?”.
“Excellent Education” is much more than making children literate and for that, we need to create a learning environment well equipped with cutting-edge resources, well-trained faculty/teachers, and a community which can put education as a top priority and ensures that the curriculum is relevant to the skills needed in the real world.
For me, “Excellent Education” is something that is the ever-evolving way of delivering knowledge, learning and training to aspirants, matched with current change and future perspective of society out there beyond boundary walls of schools, colleges and universities.
When we say “Excellent Education” I aspire to look towards the education system and society, which could have the following :
- Students should know that they are learning something useful, and should enjoy learning it along with its practical application.
- Should be related to day to day life and easy to understand for eg. application of science in some very simple day to day activities or learning to budget, starting with pocket money.
- Excellent education is something, that encourages students to ask questions. I have seen students nodding to YES just because they don’t want to feel stupid by asking questions.
- Something that can make students confident enough with the fact that, to have answers to everything doesn’t always means intelligence. Some things are realized better when left unanswered.
- An excellent education is something that imparts in you a perpetual thirst for learning.
- It is something that inspires you to learn than just study.
- Something that could teach to live life rather than just earning the livelihood.
- An education, that can create the ability to look at the world without prejudice/notions, to treat others the way they would like to be treated, and to be productive, responsible and self-reliant.
- Where there could be proper communication between parents and teachers rather than just complains.
- Where schools/colleges could call former students back to institute, irrespective of their professions, with confidence and let them share their experience and how they are making the life out of what they learnt there.
- An education system, that could help students to build their values as a better person and there role and responsibilities in the society.
But it is not limited to schools only to bring excellent education system to us. Every one of us has a role to play here, as an individual, as parents, as family members and as a responsible person of the society.
We need to think differently too. We need to motivate children to follow what they want to, study what they want to, develop skills what they wish for and support and educate them about the choices they can make rather than just imposing them. For that, we need to create an environment where,
- Students are motivated enough to attend classes for the fun of learning not merely for marks or degrees but to understand what they are learning and how to use it.
- Students are inspired to learn what is being taught, even if it looks complicated in the beginning.
- Education could be looked at with a perspective of something more valuable than just a tool to earn money.
